2CELLOS With A Modern Twist
Jan 2012 18

When I think of the cello it doesn’t conjure up thoughts of modern pop or rock music, it is not Peacock – or is it? The cello is a classical instrument which in the past was typically used to solo in a stringed orchestra, not to be used as the primary instrument to play say Metallica. Ironically, this is why the harder and heavier rock/metal music (i.e Metallica) sounds so good when played on a classical instrument. The ferocious attack modern musicians use to play a lot of the current pop and rock music is exactly what the classic composers would of loved to of had, if not for the technological limitations of the period.

Fast forward to current times, because of modern manufacturing and design improvements, almost any piece of music can be played yet remain perfectly in tune. In recent years thanks to Apocolyptica and others there has been a modern revival that Peacocks the instrument with young musicians reinterpreting modern classics for our own generation to appreciate in a totally new light!

Enter Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic Dueling of 2CELLOS. Classically trained musicians from Croatia and sometimes considered rivals managed to become partners in something that changed both their lives forever.

Here’s the timeline of these two phenoms amazing success:

  • January 2011 – Post a video cover of Michael Jacksons “Smooth Criminal” on YouTube, in the first two weeks it goes viral and gets over 3 million hits.
  • April 2011 – Perform on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
  • May 2011 – Sign with Sony Records and in July 19th the self-titled album – 2CELLOS – is released featuring covers of songs by U2, Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Sting, Coldplay, Nirvana and Kings of Leon.
  • June 2011 – As a result of their success Elton John asks them to tour with him in a 30 city tour.

To think all this from a YouTube Video – inspiring.

See the vids below: Just make sure you do these virtuosos justice and run their music through a decent set of speakers. My personal favorite below is the rousing live performance that rocks Nirvanas “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” You will never again doubt how Peacock a cello can be – enjoy!
